Adapt and Overcome… It’s undoubtedly easier said than done, but it’s unquestionably possible.

Our story is a journey of resilience, a tale well worth sharing. My husband and I have celebrated nearly 9 years of marriage. The day we got engaged was a hectic one. Overwhelmed and stressed at work, I was reassured by his words: “Today will be worth it.” Little did I know that later that evening, I would joyfully say yes to my amazing husband when he proposed.

Fast forward 9 years, and that quote, “Today will be worth it,” became a lifeline, saving me more than once and helping me navigate through some of life’s most challenging moments.

In early 2017, we received the heartbreaking news that having children naturally was not an option for us. Despite the crushing blow, we recognized alternative paths and adjusted our plans, determined to move forward.

We set goals, built a home, and saved money, all in preparation to expand our family. Come 2020, we initiated the emotionally taxing journey of in vitro fertilization (IVF). Enduring over 500 shots, 5 failed IVF transfer cycles, and the loss of 6 children, we found ourselves exhausted, emotionally drained, and grappling with grief, pain, heartache, and frustration. We felt like damaged goods, unsure where to begin rebuilding.

Yet, our mantra persisted: “Today will be worth it.”

Adapt we did, once again.

While the process was arduous, we understood the need to adapt to our new reality. Throughout this challenging journey, we experienced love, service, peace, hope, and happiness. Our faith provided strength, assuring us of the eternal nature of our family and the promise of reuniting with our children in the future. Family and friends became pillars of support, guiding us towards peace amid life’s unexpected detour. Currently we are on the path to becoming foster parents. We have found peace and a reason to keep living, and the strength to face each day.

Although most days are tough, we find solace in our Savior, moving forward with faith, trusting in the arrival of miracles and blessings.

If you find yourself amidst difficult days, remember you’re not alone. Seek out your glimmer moments – those small, simple joys. Trust that you’ll discover the path you’re meant to tread. Be willing to adapt and understand that overcoming life’s trials is a continuous work in progress. Miracles and happiness will come if you persist, adapting to life’s challenges, finding joy in the ordinary, and being open to changing plans.

Just keep moving, keep striving, keep adapting, and find those glimmer moments along the way. Remember, you’ve got this, and as my husband told me 9 years ago, “Today will be worth it.”

I have always heard about people having a mid-life crisis in their 40s or even 50s, but mine hit when I was just 30. Hopefully that isn’t a sign for how long my life will be. Unhappy with where my career was at, even though I had a relatively good job, I became obsessed with the idea of starting my own business and working for myself. As a husband and father of several small children, this was an especially overwhelming thought. What if I failed? Did I dare take them down this uncertain path with me? I nearly talked myself out of it multiple times, but ultimately, with the support of my loving wife, went all in. After spending about a year planning and organizing my new business, I quit my job and began a new chapter as my own boss. I could probably write a few different “Adapt and Overcome” stories just from the things that had to be overcome before I was ever even ready to quit my job, but I wanted to focus this particular story around the first year of being in business.

The company I started was centered around social media marketing. I had pitched my business plan to several entrepreneurs I knew and had received extremely positive feedback. I was confident that I had a great idea, and I was going to be incredibly successful in this endeavor. Failure was not an option for me, and I was convinced my idea was nearly failure-proof.

Well, as you have probably already guessed, my initial business model, everything it was designed to do to make money, was an epic failure, and never brought in a single dollar of revenue. The decision to quit my job and start my own business; however, was a great success and one of the best decisions I ever made. You might be asking yourself, “How can this be?” Simply put, because I was willing to adapt and overcome.

Right from the very start I discovered that most of the business owners I was soliciting my new service to had plenty of other needs than my gimmicky social media nonsense. And they would ask me if I could offer those other services. And do you know what I told them? Of course I could! Initially almost every job that I took on was completely out of my skillset. In fact, the very first gig offered to me was to help design a brand new product for an industry I knew nothing about. Up to this point I had never designed anything before, and had never even used Adobe Illustrator, which was required to facilitate this job. This did not stop me though, and I spent as much time as possible learning everything I could about this industry, product design, and Illustrator. I also asked others for help, and ultimately delivered a great product to the client. This was the first of many, many opportunities like this. A few examples of other projects I was asked to do include: building websites, designing an entire magazine, managing an advertising sales team, home inspections, logo design, and so many other things I had never done before. It was a crazy time, and looking back I am honestly amazed at the scope of some of the gigs I picked up and how I was able to manage them.

There is a saying I’ve always loved, which states, “God cannot steer a parked car.” This is a universal principle, whether you hold to a belief in a higher power or not. You’ll never know what you could have accomplished if you never make an effort. You cannot steer your own car to a better life or to overcome your struggles, if you never pull out of the driveway. In my case, I believe 100% that the Lord guided me through this and many other challenges in my life, but it first required me to get moving and take the initial step.

The skills I picked up freelancing have forever changed my life. I have opportunities today that only exist because of the experiences and struggles I went through during this period of my life. I had to be willing to abandon my initial business model and adapt to the opportunities before me. It would have been really easy to tell potential clients that I did not offer the services they needed and stick to my original plan, but ultimately I believe that would have been the wrong decision. My success and growth came because I was willing to adapt and overcome.

I love the motto, Adapt and Overcome!!
Sometimes a daily battle for me…
I had a hip replaced when I was 35.
This was the point in my life where I was the most unhealthy.
I am a 5’ 1” woman and weighed 203 pounds.
During my rehab period after my hip replacement, I realized I had been given another chance so I decided to cash in on it.
I joined weight watchers and found a personal trainer.
Over the course of about 10-12 months I brought my weight down to 147 and went from a size tight 22 to a loose 10 – almost to an 8.
Less than a year and a half after my hip surgery, I ran in a 5K… I did not run the entire race … but I was able to start at the beginning of the group … with the runners! Something I had never been able to do.
Then – in august of 2010 – all of my training came to a screeching halt when the motorcycle I was a passenger on T-boned an F-250 that ran a red light. I received a compression fracture in my lower back and had to wear a tortoise shell back brace for the next 3 months.
Current situation – I am within 10 pounds of where I was at that moment but my physical condition isn’t great.
I have a desk job so I sit all day behind a computer.
I have enlisted the help of an old friend (who has a background in nursing, firefighting, and personal training) to assist me with a little bit of a jumpstart to see if I can get back on track. (I haven’t been in the gym for 13 years! And I’m scared!)
I can DO THIS!! I’ve done it before and I WILL do it again!
I will “Adapt and Overcome” and I will get it done!

There are a multitude of challenges that I had to overcome in order to get back to being a firefighter after my leg amputation, but there is one that stood out…learning how to walk again. Do you remember learning how to walk? Probably not. You were 1 year old. I’ll tell you right now, at 39 years old, it wasn’t easy.

When I first got my prosthesis, it was very painful to put any pressure on my residual stump. That part of the body wasn’t designed to withstand my body weight. Combine that with my knee buckling every time I took a step, made it extremely difficult to walk. You see, on my right leg, I have a heel. So every time I take a step, my heel hits the ground, which fires my patella tendon, which in turn, keeps my knee from buckling, and I walk normally. However, on my left side, I don’t have a heel. So I had to figure out a way to fire my patella tendon so my knee wouldn’t buckle. I figured out that if I flexed my quadricep in my thigh, my patella tendon would fire, then my knee wouldn’t buckle, and I could take a step without falling. Seems easy enough right? Well, let me tell you, it’s not! Every single time I took a step, I had to tell myself, “Flex my quad. Flex my quad.” Every. Single. Step. If I forgot, then my knee would buckle, and I would take a tumble. If I was having a conversation with someone as I was walking, I would have to pause between steps and say “flex my quad” or my knee would buckle. It made for some interesting conversation! So, it took hours and hours and days and weeks and months to build muscle memory in my brain so that I don’t have to remind myself on every step to “Flex my quad.”

It’s been over 4 years and every now and then, it still buckles on me. I guess 39 years of not having to say “Flex my quad” still creeps into my brain and it forgets. But, I’m reminded of it very quickly! This is just one of the challenges that I’ve had to Adapt and Overcome since becoming an amputee. It is so hard but it is so worth it. If you do the easy things in life, life will be hard. However, if you do the hard things in life, life will be easier. Adapt and Overcome!
